The Tale of the Shepherd Boy

At the center of the captivating rolling meadows, dwelt a young shepherd. His being was mostly unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His main role was essentially to look after his herd of rams.

Their soft bleating and the whispering of the gales across the solo tree on the peak were his main companions. Day after day, watching over his charges instilled in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.

However, there were occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would long for company. During one such occasion out of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous plot.

Stories of wolves prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy opted to used this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.

One afternoon he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! A wolf is that has taken my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but found no wolf.

The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This prank laughed for a couple of more days. However, one noon, a real wolf actually come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy dashed for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to read more the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the results of dishonesty.

The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is tough to reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
